NAATI CCL Practice Guide

NAATI CCL Test Format

Understanding the NAATI CCL test format helps you practise the right way. The test is based on two pre-recorded dialogues between an English speaker and a speaker of your selected language. You listen to short segments and interpret each segment into the other language.

Test structure

Two dialogues
Each dialogue is approximately 300 words
Dialogue segments are usually 35 words or less
About half the content is in English and half in your other language
You interpret after each chime
You must begin interpreting within a few seconds

Common topic areas

The test reflects real-life Australian community situations. Topics may include health, legal, education, employment, housing, immigration, financial, insurance, consumer affairs and social services.

How to practise for the format

Do not practise by reading long scripts only. Practise in small audio segments, because the real test is segment-based. Train yourself to listen, note, speak and move on.
