NAATI CCL Validity & Renewal Rules: How Long Does It Last?

Your NAATI CCL result is not valid forever. Here is exactly how long it lasts, when you can use it for PR points, and what your renewal options look like if it expires before your visa is granted.

NAATI CCL Validity & Renewal Rules: How Long Does It Last?

NAATI CCL Validity & Renewal Rules

Passing the NAATI CCL is a milestone, not a permanent achievement. The result has a defined validity period, and candidates who don't track it carefully sometimes find their 5 PR points have lapsed by the time their visa application is processed. This guide explains exactly how long your CCL result lasts, when it counts for points, and what to do if it's about to expire.

How long is the NAATI CCL valid?

A passed NAATI CCL result is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. This is the validity period the Department of Home Affairs accepts for the 5 PR points credit toward skilled migration visas.
ElementValidity
Result certificate3 years from issue date
5 PR points credit3 years from issue date
EOI (Expression of Interest) lodgementWithin validity window
Visa applicationMust use a valid result at lodgement
The 3-year clock starts on the date NAATI issues your result, not the date you sat the test. There's a 6–10 week gap between the test and the result. That gap counts as part of your validity.

What "validity" actually means in practice

Your NAATI CCL result is valid as long as you can demonstrate it was current at the relevant decision point. The key dates are:
  • Date of EOI lodgement — your CCL must be valid here for the points to be claimable
  • Date of invitation to apply — the points are confirmed at this stage
  • Date of visa lodgement — your CCL must still be valid
  • The most important date is your visa lodgement. Time your CCL test so that the result will still be valid when you actually lodge your visa, not just when you submit your EOI.

    The expiry trap

The most common mistake is treating the EOI lodgement as the only relevant date. Here's how the trap works: a candidate sits the CCL in March 2024, gets the result in May 2024, lodges an EOI in June 2024 with 5 PR points claimed. They wait for an invitation. The invitation comes in April 2027 — almost 3 years later. By the time they lodge the visa application, the CCL result has expired in May 2027. The points are no longer valid. The visa application either fails or must be re-lodged after a fresh CCL.
If your invitation comes in the final 6 months of your CCL validity, lodge your visa application immediately. Do not wait. The CCL must be valid on the date of lodgement, and processing delays inside the Department do not extend your validity.

    What happens if it expires?

If your CCL result expires before you lodge your visa, you have a few options. Option 1: Resit the CCL. A fresh test gives a fresh 3-year validity. Option 2: Use a different language credential. If you've gained proficiency in another LOTE. Option 3: Drop the 5 points. If your overall points score is high enough without the CCL. Option 4: Combine with other point sources. State sponsorship, partner skills, or regional points.

    Is there a renewal process?

There is no formal renewal. Once expired, the result is expired. To regain the 5 points, you must sit the CCL again. NAATI does not offer:
  • A discounted resit for previously passed candidates
  • An automatic extension on validity
  • A renewal exam
  • The full test fee applies to a resit.

The 3-year window for skilled migration

For most candidates, the 3-year validity is generous. The typical migration timeline:
  • Months 0–2 — sit and pass CCL
  • Months 2–6 — lodge EOI
  • Months 6–24 — wait for invitation
  • Months 24–36 — visa lodgement and processing
  • Within 3 years, this works for most candidates. Where it fails is for occupations with extreme backlogs (some IT and engineering categories have 24+ month invitation waits).
Validity periodThe 3-year window during which your CCL counts
EOIExpression of Interest, the first step in skilled migration
InvitationThe Department's invitation to apply for a visa
LodgementThe formal submission of your visa application

    Planning your CCL timing

To maximise validity for migration, sit the test as close as possible to your EOI lodgement, not years before. A common mistake is sitting the CCL early "to get it out of the way" while completing other steps. This burns months of validity you'll need later.
Treat the CCL as the last preparation step before your EOI, not the first. The clock starts the moment your result is issued.

    Frequently asked questions

How long is my NAATI CCL result valid? Three years from the date NAATI issues the result. Not from the date you sat the test. Can I extend the validity? No. There is no formal extension or renewal. To regain the points, you must resit the CCL. Does the result expire even if I've used it for my EOI? The result must be valid at the date of visa lodgement, not just EOI. If your invitation arrives near expiry, lodge quickly. Is the CCL valid for purposes other than migration? NAATI does not certify the CCL for working as an interpreter — that requires the separate Certified Provisional Interpreter test. The CCL is purely for the 5 PR points credit. Can I claim the points if my certificate is expired but was valid at EOI? The Department of Home Affairs requires the result to be valid at lodgement of the visa application, not just at EOI. If it expires before lodgement, you cannot claim the points.
